This hotel made me think of poor Cinderella deserving to go to the ball, but not having the means, until her Fairy Godmother arrives. The San Giorgio is perfectly placed for travellers, being so convenient to the train station, and tour bus meet-ups, just around the corner, and in walking distance to everything for sightseers. Yet, it's tucked into a quiet, pleasant corner of a small Piazza, opposite the S Maria Novella. Excellent price, including breakfast and WIFI. My room, 107 on the first floor, was very spacious, cheerful yellow draperies and bedspread, matching the headboard. Immaculate linen. Huge bathroom, with hair dryer. Flatscreen TV only showed the news in English, otherwise mostly Italian. Guests were given a heavy brass keyholder, which you handed in each time you went out, and picked up on returning. The lift was working. The breakfast area was cheerful, and offered a great selection of cold foods only, standard. Freshly made coffee was included, but only on request. Hot water for tea had to be asked for, and served to your table in steel jugs, so the heat didn't last long. It would have been great to have hot water urns available 24 hours, for guests to revive themselves with an instant coffee, or teabag. There was also a pleasant separate sitting room.

However!

There was a bad smell from the bathroom, when I first entered the room, although it looked clean enough. Also, the entry door lock panel was very loose, so I was worried about security. There was a second entry/exit door from the spacious bathroom, so I checked its door lock, which was secure. It was hilarious trying to convey the need for a screwdriver on the door lock, and bad smell, (holding my nose), to the young staff, who seemed to have little English, and I had little Italian language. (Shades of Fawlty Towers). I was told it would be attended to, and upon my return, the air conditioning was running, the smell was gone, but the door lock was never fixed. The screwhole was too big for the screw. I left my things locked in my suitcase. I jammed chairs against both doors at night. Overall, The Hotel San Giorgio needs to do battle with the 70's dark brown woodwork, damaged, chipped, and mould stained areas, such as doors, door frames, and wobbly furniture. There was peeling wall paper in my room, and chipped walls. All the carpets in the foyer, steps, my room, sitting area, and dining area needed vacuuming, but particularly the reception area, the first "face" of the Hotel you see.

In conclusion, I would love to visit The Hotel San Giorgio again, after further renovations as described above. It has enormous potential. Any Fairy Godmothers out there, take note!

No fue posible lograr conexión en nuestra habitación. Recurrimos a un local frente al hotel. Remarcamos la atención de casi todo el personal de recepción, especialmente de Lucas que estuvo siempre atento a solucionar nuestras demandas, con la máxima amabilidad.

Hôtel à recommander, ce que je ferai si l'occasion se présente.

This hotel does not deserve its 3 star rating. In my opinion the hotel is a 2 star rather than a 3 star. The staff is wonderful and the service is excellent. We were treated very well and we enjoyed our two night stay because of the wonderful people. The room we were assigned looked nothing like the photographs. The bed was marginally comfortable, the furnishings barely adequate. There was marginal TV service and the TV was old and of very poor quality. This hotel does not live up to its own promotion. The only good thing was that the room was very clean and we were happy about that.
